Seldom has there been a new artist to come into modern Hip Hop music and truly bring genuine skill, creativity and shocking entertainment. But when it comes to hope of such an artist, there is one making such a stamp on the game; who’s buzz is like that of a snowball rolling down a mountain… constantly building momentum and growing in size. That artist is Bishop Lamont. Sprung from the west coast and fully educated in Hip Hop’s history, Bishop (real name Phillip Martin) signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment and has since released a slew of critically acclaimed and loved street albums such as “N!gger Noize”, “Caltroit” with Black Milk, “The Confessional” and “The Pope Mobile”.
What’s different from these “street albums” as opposed to every other so-called “artist’s” mix-tapes? The answer is obvious. Bishop showcases album quality songs produced with original beats by some of Hip Hop’s most renowned producers. A true MC; Bishop gives his full effort when creating music. It doesn’t matter if it’s a street album, a guest verse, his own solo LP or writing for other rappers. He will always give you quality music which guarantees pure enjoyment for an audience. And as a true fan of Hip Hop himself, he offers the music he creates with his street albums to fans for free.
In an age where the creativity of Hip Hop music has lessened tremendously, where sales have taken an all time plummet, and where auto-tune is widely used in hopes of disguising one’s weak voice and/or amateur lyrical execution… Bishop Lamont is about to start a revolution… or should I say a reformation? Aside from supreme lyrical talent and a solid rapid fire delivery, what make Mr. Lamont stand out from every other new artist today? For one, being signed to Hip Hop’s elite team would not make him impulsively and immaturely tattoo the Aftermath logo on his arm, face, back, or anywhere on his person. Nor does he use the name to constantly name drop the label’s boss to validate him as a dope MC. Bishop relies completely on his own persona and skill as an artist and he doesn’t care about label politics nor the played out image of a mobster.
Why do you think the good Doctor signed him? He doesn’t need to make videos of him smoking weed; trying to seem cool to kids or be gangster-like, claiming to be a blood, crip or whatever excuse commonly used by many to cover-up for lack of talent. Bishop Lamont gives you rhyming prowess; blossomed from his love for music and Hip Hop. He gives you creativity, humor, entertainment, controversy as well as touching upon conscience issues such as politics, history, spirituality and morality… freshly mixed with a little California party ambiance, of course. In all honesty, who else is using their skill on the microphone today the way Bishop Lamont is? Who is using their pen and pad as a weapon of light in the game today? The answer will no doubt become clear to the entire world when you hear Bishop on “DETOX” and his highly anticipated debut “The Reformation”.
In the meantime, Bishop is giving listeners another full street album just in time for the holidays. Enlisting collaborator Indef, Bishop hopes to end 2009 with a treat for fans of Hip Hop music and general music alike. On December 24th, 2009, Bishop Lamont and Indef will unleash “Team America: Fuck Yeah!” for everyone to hear. The untagged version of the album will also be available on iTunes very soon! Featuring the legendary Warren G., Nate Dogg, Damizza and more, this new street album once again contains original production and songs. “Team America” boasts an audio version of the satirical comedy that the creators of South Park brought to the silver screen.
This time, it is taken to a whole new level and made into a concept album full of humor, comical raps, controversy and storytelling. Once again, the humor and controversy does not hinder the lyrical ability as showcased by Bishop in the leaked singles “Money on My Head” and the title track- Team America: Fuck Yeah. Both songs, in addition to the Katie Holmes/Bishop Lamont affair rumor and the leaked call from Tom Cruise where he threatens Bishop, are getting wide notoriety spreading across the streets and the internet. When “The Howling” was released last year on Indef’s mix-tape “The Product”, Bishop delivered a guest verse showcasing a story that held the eerie feeling of a Tim Burton tale on wax.
Now, they team back up together to destroy wackness in the world. Wackness metaphorically and literally embodied by the character display of terrorists, dictators, conniving celebrities, deceiving politicians and straight-up wack rappers. There have even been reports that high ranking members of the Scientology community have tried to shut down the project; similar to what the FBI tried to do with “N!gger Noize”. They are a team created to make fans happy and make their targets lose sleep.
They are “Team America: Fuck Yeah!” and they are chuuuching to a street near you, real soon. Remember, if a project is not condoned by Diocese, than it’s probably not worth your time. If Hip Hop was indeed a game of chess, Dr. Dre is bringing the piece that will checkmate these so-called “kings” of rap.
